Somatic Breathwork: the Ultimate Tool to Get “Unstuck”

Somatic Breathwork is an embodiment experience that takes you out of your thinking mind and into your body’s electrical network- your nervous system.

We use conscious breathing techniques, rhythmic music, and verbal cues to guide you through a transformational experience that can feel cathartic, deeply peaceful, and clarifying.

Using your breath to activate your nervous system, you’ll stay anchored in the present moment, bring awareness to stress you’ve been holding onto and emotions you’ve been suppressing, and let them go. That can look like moving, shaking, yelling, crying, laughing, or simply breathing.

You’ll sweep away beliefs or stories in the mind that have been holding you back and reconnect with how you truly want to feel and show up in the world each day.

*Somatic Breathwork is NOT just a way to relax or deal with stress.

By re-connecting the power of your mind with the innate wisdom of your body, Somatic Breathwork is a tool for self-discovery, reconnecting with your authentic self, and regulating your nervous system.

Somatic BreathworK & nervous system Regulation

A brief explainer

Your nervous system controls your stress response. When you feel “stressed” or anxious, that’s your nervous system turning on, going into fight-or-flight mode.

But most of us have a hard time controlling our nervous system. We struggle with turning it ON and getting it to turn OFF.

  • If you have trouble turning it OFF, it’s probably hard for you to meditate or relax. You’re constantly on the go, feeling on edge a lot of the time.

  • If you have a hard time turning it ON, you probably lack energy, motivation, and drive. You want more passion and zest for life.

Many people get stuck with their nervous system ON all the time, and have trouble shutting it off.

But it’s also very common to get stuck in the OFF position.

Usually, we get to this state of low-energy, numbness, even depression, after going on for too long with our nervous system in the “on” position. We’ve been working so hard to deal with stress- maybe silencing our voice or pushing down uncomfortable emotions- that our nervous system shuts down, our bodies break down, and our spirits dim.

And then there’s a third possibility- maybe you experience BOTH: stressed and anxious one moment, drained and numb the next, and feeling out of control.

—> Those are the three different ways that nervous system dysregulation can show up.

the Answer? Nervous System regulation

Important: “regulation” doesn’t mean feeling calm and relaxed all the time. Because sometimes you don’t want to feel calm and relaxed. You want energy to perform!

Having a regulated nervous system means having the ability to CHOOSE.

It means being able to turn your system on and have passion and energy to get all the things done that you need to get done. And also being able to shut it off, relax, and allow your body and mind to heal. It means being able to fluctuate and flow between those two states as needed.

Somatic Breathwork is designed to help you regulate your nervous system so that you have that CHOICE.

In a Somatic Breathwork session you’ll use you’re breath to turn your nervous system ON fully… so that you can then turn it OFF fully. You’re literally re-training yourself to respond to stress more healthfully and effectively.

My somatic breathwork session was an intense, positive experience. The session helped me release tension I didn’t realize I was holding and left me feeling calm and relaxed. It was powerful and healing. I would recommend this for anyone looking to let go of stored emotions. Thank you Jen 🙏

About ME

I’m Jen, a SOMA+IQ™ Somatic Breathwork Facilitator and Holistic Burnout Recovery Coach

I began experimenting with breathwork when the stress I thought I’d left behind in my previous career began to return. I’d changed my job, but I hadn’t changed my ability to deal with stress and anxiety - which had plagued me my whole life, sometimes causing panic attacks.

It was clear I had work to do.

I started off practicing simple box breathing, usually for just a couple minutes at a time. Even that brief practice, when I committed to it daily, had a profound effect on my mental and emotional state. I started to feel lighter and more present in my life.

With time, I dove deeper into breathwork, learning new breathing techniques and studying why and how we can use our breath to deal with stress.

That deep dive eventually landed me in a live, 90-minute Somatic Breathwork practice with SOMA+IQ™ - and it changed my life.

Somatic Breathwork has been the missing piece I needed to finally overcome anxiety and mindsets that have held me back in the past- like perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and a fear of being seen. It’s even helped me deal with the biggest source of stress in my life - my mother’s declining health and my fear of losing her.

The internal transformation I’ve experienced is so powerful, that I felt compelled to become trained as a practitioner so I could share it with others.

That’s where you come in. The only way to truly understand the impact Somatic Breathwork can make in your life is to experience it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

  • A full Somatic Breathwork session lasts 60 minutes, but we’ll normally spend ~15 minutes getting oriented at the beginning, and ~15 minutes sharing at the end.

In total, you should plan on 90 minutes.

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing with elastic waistbands, so that you can breathe easily.

  • Avoid eating for ~2 hours before your session.

The session is done lying down on a yoga mat or blanket. You’ll also want to have a water bottle nearby. I suggest having a journal/notebook and pen handy, to write down any thoughts that arise during the session.

For virtual sessions, you will need a pair of high quality headphones or earbuds. And you’ll need a quiet space where you will be unbothered for the session.

Also optional: pillow, additional blanket, eye mask.

  • Yes!

Please use the contact form above to let me know what you’re interested in. Also note that for these kinds of group sessions, sometimes a shorter ~30 minute session is preferable. When we talk we can decide what would work best.

  • Somatic Breathwork is designed to be an accessible practice for stress release and self-discovery, for adults.

Out of an abundance of caution, you should not participate if you are/have:

    • pregnant

    • a history of heart problems or stroke

    • high-blood pressure that is NOT being treated

    • epilepsy or history of seizures

    • major psychiatric conditions

    • glaucoma or retinal detachment

    • osteoporosis

    • recent surgery

    • if you have asthma, consult with your dr. and bring your inhaler

If you have any doubts, please consult your doctor and feel free to contact me with questions.

  • No two breathwork experiences are alike. I have worked with clients who had a “bad” experience before (with a different type of breathwork), but had a wonderful experience with Somatic Breathwork.

I am trained to facilitate this practice through a trauma-informed approach. That means there is no “forcing” and no expectations. I am here to hold space for you through your experience.

During your session, YOU are always in control. You can slow down your breath if it feels too intense. Somatic Breathwork is considered a beginner-friendly practice.

*If you’re concerned, please contact me and I’ll be happy to answer all your questions.

Transformations

Tia: I received clear faith, plus an abundance of other insights…

You created a perfect container! Even after my tech issues, the space you held allowed me to feel completely safe, so safe that I realized I want to create that sense of safety within myself. I felt that you were completely attuned to me. My intention was to gain blind faith, and instead I received CLEAR faith, plus an abundance of other insights. THANK YOU!
— Tia

Nicole: The session helped me identify and confront a source of stress I’d been unconsciously avoiding…

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a somatic breathwork session with Jen, alongside my sister and neighbor. From the very beginning, Jen created a safe and welcoming space. She clearly explained what to expect, how our bodies might respond, and reminded us that whatever we experienced was completely valid—there was no right or wrong.

I’ve always struggled with traditional meditation and breathing exercises because my mind tends to stay busy, but this somatic technique helped me truly quiet my thoughts and be present in a way I hadn’t been able to before.
One of my favorite parts of the session was setting an intention—choosing a single word that resonated and writing it down. Interestingly, that word shifted for me by the end of the session, and again a few days later. It took time for my mind to fully process what I had experienced. I went through moments of discomfort and even anger, but ultimately, the session helped me identify and confront a source of stress I’d been unconsciously avoiding.

I would absolutely recommend this experience—and especially working with Jen. If you’re looking to deepen your self-awareness and take meaningful steps toward reducing stress, this is a powerful and supportive place to start.

Fawn: The next day I felt lighter and had more clarity…

Jen’s voice is incredibly calming and grounding, creating the perfect environment for deep, intentional breathwork. Her guidance is beautifully timed, helping you shift your breathing patterns with ease and clarity.

What stood out most for me during the session was the moment I could quite literally feel the stress leaving my body with each exhale. You might experience tears or moments of discomfort—but that’s just your body releasing the tension and stress you’ve been silently carrying.

My biggest realization was just how deeply that unaddressed stress had been impacting both my mental and physical health. The next day I felt lighter and had more clarity.

Somatic breathwork is a powerful tool, and I truly believe it’s something everyone should consider adding to their self-care routine.
